Both of ChatGPT's business plans make the same commitment about model training. That settles the question most people start the plan comparison with, before the comparison even begins.
In our experience, the question of ChatGPT Enterprise or ChatGPT Team gets asked as a data protection question. It can only be answered as an operations question. What differs between the plans is three things that surface after the purchase: who can be switched off, where the content sits, and what comes back out at the end.
For an SME with thirty to two hundred people, that is not an academic distinction. The difference determines how much manual work lands on one person, who is already running this tool on the side.
What ChatGPT Enterprise and Team do the same way
Both plans exclude training on your company data by default. OpenAI writes, for Enterprise, Business, Edu and the API platform: "we do not use data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Edu ... for training or improving our models", and that explicitly covers both inputs and outputs. Both plans also come with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 or higher in transit.
The contractual frame is the same as well. A data processing agreement exists for both plans, and for Swiss companies it settles something that rarely shows up in comparison tables: the Data Processing Addendum in its version of 1 January 2026 is not entered into with the US entity for customers based in the EEA or Switzerland, but with OpenAI Ireland Ltd. EEA and Swiss data is treated as its own category in it, and any transfer outside that area is covered by standard contractual clauses.
So if you want to know whether there is a governed contractual basis at all: yes, in both plans. Compared with a private free account, that is the real step up, and which data belongs in such a tool under which account is something we have written up separately, from data classification to the company account. This piece is about the step after that: the company account is decided, now which one.
ChatGPT Team has been called ChatGPT Business since 2025
ChatGPT Team no longer exists under that name. OpenAI states it in its own FAQ: "ChatGPT Team was renamed to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025", existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces, and the rename itself changed neither features nor pricing nor limits.
That has two practical consequences. You search the price list for a name that is no longer on it; the sign-up address, by the way, still carries the old word, the link is still called team-sign-up. And comparison articles from 2025 describe a state from before the rename, while later changes to pricing and seat types ran independently of it, according to OpenAI. Check the date on every source for this topic before you adopt its table.
For the rest of this piece the smaller plan is called Business, because that is what it is called today.
Difference 1: who can be switched off
Business comes with multi-factor sign-in, sign-in through the company login via SAML, roles for owners, admins and members, a control for third-party GPTs and basic usage analytics. ChatGPT Enterprise includes all of that and adds four things that take administrative work off your hands: SCIM for automatic provisioning and deprovisioning of accounts, role-based access controls with custom roles per group, centralized spend controls and usage analytics per person. OpenAI puts the boundary on its own product page without any hedging: "Need Enterprise SCIM, role-based access controls, or data residency? Contact sales".
You will notice this difference when someone resigns. When a person leaves, removal from the directory normally happens automatically. Without SCIM, the AI workspace is a second place where somebody has to do something by hand, and that somebody has other things on their mind that day.
Two further points from the same FAQ belong in this calculation. In a Business workspace, members can invite further members as long as paid seats are available, and according to OpenAI that currently cannot be restricted. Removing a person frees the seat for reassignment but does not reduce the paid seat count; the reduction only takes effect at the next billing cycle. A workspace therefore grows more easily than it shrinks, in the member list and on the invoice.
Difference 2: where the content sits
In our experience, Swiss customers look more closely at this point, and the answer is messier than the product page suggests.
For ChatGPT, the choice of storage location is tied to the contract type, according to OpenAI: "Eligible API customers and new ChatGPT Enterprise/Edu customers can choose to have in-scope customer content stored at rest in supported countries". The region list names Europe as "EEA + Switzerland". That does not mean a Swiss data centre, it means a European region that Switzerland is counted into. For Enterprise and Edu, this choice is included at no additional cost.
Processing is a separate matter. A second setting keeps model execution on GPUs inside the region, available for Europe including Switzerland, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, and it requires the storage choice to be enabled. OpenAI answers the obvious follow-up question itself with a clear no: authentication, routing and analytics can still run outside the region, as can text extraction from uploaded PDF or Word files. Workspace name, billing data, user logins and anything that goes to third parties through connected apps or web search also stay outside.
For Business it looks different, in three points you want to know before you buy. OpenAI writes that the storage location choice for Business is rolling out gradually and not yet available to all customers. Where it is available, you pick the region at checkout, meaning once, at purchase. And it covers storage, not processing.
The third point we found in no comparison table. According to the same page, the abuse-monitoring logs for Business sit in the United States regardless of the region you choose. And if you pick a region outside the United States, a copy of every prompt and every response is additionally stored in the United States for a limited time. Nobody is hiding this, it is in the documentation. It simply belongs where it is needed, namely in the answer you give the customer whose security questionnaire asks about your use of AI. What else such a contract has to answer is something we worked through on the data processing agreement for AI tools.
Difference 3: what comes back out
Before the purchase this rarely comes up, after a cancellation it comes up immediately: how the content gets back out.
For Business the answer sits as one sentence in the FAQ: "Self-service data export is not available in ChatGPT Business workspaces". So for a year of work in the workspace there is no button that pulls it out. What happens after a cancellation fits that picture: the workspace can be deactivated, which does not delete the data, but members lose access, and only owners can reactivate it. Two Business workspaces also cannot be merged, and a new one inherits nothing from the old one.
Retention is the second part of this. Retention can be configured, according to OpenAI, by "qualifying organizations", meaning organisations that meet certain conditions. The clean response to that is a question to the vendor about whether you are one, not an assumption. The data processing agreement adds that OpenAI returns or deletes customer data after the contract ends, on the customer's instruction. On instruction. Somebody has to give it.
That is the level on which the plan question is decided, if it decides anything at all: not on the protection commitment, but on the question of what you keep when you switch in two years.
The clause in the contract that hands the work back
The data processing agreement contains a clause that puts the whole plan comparison in its place. Under the customer's obligations, OpenAI states that the customer is responsible for certain configurations and design decisions, "(e.g., retention periods, deletion, etc.) in a manner that complies with applicable Data Protection Laws". In plain terms: setting retention periods and deletion, and doing so lawfully, is not part of what you bought. That is your job.
This flips the question. The higher plan does not sell better protection, it sells adjustment knobs and takes manual work away. The duty to set those knobs correctly stays with you in both plans. A workspace with every Enterprise feature and nobody to set them sits at the same point as a Business workspace without them.
Two more duties are easy to miss in the contract. Changes to the sub-processor list arrive as a notification, and the right to object is tied to thirty days. So somebody has to read those notifications. An audit at the vendor is limited to once per year and runs at your expense. A name has to stand behind both.
The bottleneck, then, is not the plan. It is a person. They pick the region at checkout, because with Business there is no second chance for it. They set retention, go through the member list now and then, and answer the customer questionnaire. That responsibility is the core of our AI governance work, and when nobody in the house has the hours for it, it is the first part an AI lead embedded in operations takes over.
What the surcharge is not good for
Three items are not worth it, in our experience.
First, moving to ChatGPT Enterprise on data protection grounds. The training commitment is in both plans, so is the encryption, and the data processing agreement exists for both. Anyone arguing that way is paying for administration and writing protection on the invoice.
Then the vendor questionnaire that asks back every line of the product page. It does not answer the three points above and it does not replace the responsibility that everything hangs on.
And a second AI platform next to the existing one. Two workspaces mean two member lists, two retention settings, two offboarding processes. That is double maintenance.
What does hold up: Enterprise, when account removal has to run automatically, when you want a storage region fixed contractually, or when roles need to be cleanly separated. Those are operational reasons, and they hold up in a budget conversation, because they name work that otherwise lands on one person.
Before checkout
The plan comparison becomes useful when you run it in this order. How are accounts removed when someone leaves. Which region holds the content, and what sits elsewhere anyway. And how does the content come back out when you switch vendors. Whatever sounds like a protection commitment is already in both plans. You will decide on the administration.
If you are facing this decision, we will go through the three points for your case in a first conversation, with no obligation and no product in the background.
Who at your company would notice if someone left the workspace tomorrow?
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Enterprise?
On data protection, barely any: both plans exclude training on company data by default and both come with a data processing agreement. Enterprise adds administrative functions, above all SCIM for automatic account removal, role-based access controls and the choice of a storage region.
Does ChatGPT Team still exist?
Not under that name. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on 29 August 2025. Existing workspaces automatically became Business workspaces, and features, pricing and limits were unchanged by the rename itself. Comparison articles from 2025 therefore describe an older state.
Does ChatGPT data stay in Switzerland?
The storage region choice lists Europe as EEA plus Switzerland, meaning a European region rather than a Swiss data centre. It is open to new Enterprise and Edu customers, while for Business it is rolling out gradually. Abuse-monitoring logs for Business sit in the United States regardless.
